Handcrafted Japanese Lacquer Bowl

designed by Ido Ferber | wooden base made by Demura Hayato | base coat lacquering by Masahiro Tanaka | top coat lacquering by Arakawa Fumihiko

Since moving to this remote village of Yamanaka Onsen, we have been fascinated by the local craft scene. Yamanaka is well known for its woodturning and lacquering school and the craftspeople that surround it, and we are always striving to piece together the various craftspeople that live and work around us.

As the decline of crafts around the world and the daily struggle of craftspeople everywhere has affected Japan as well as any other country, we decided to try and use this platform to help where we can. This collaboration is the first of more to come, combining Sentomono designs and local crafts. Bringing more quality work and appreciation to this small town.

Hayato Demura is a graduate of the Ishikiwawa Prefectural Institute of Yamanaka Lacquerware and is currently the head turner of the famous Oshita family. He is skilled in the art of woodturning and produces many different forms for many different urushi craftsmen.

Arakawa Fumihiko is one of the prominent teachers at the Ishikawa Prefectural Institute of Yamanaka Lacquerware. He is well known in the region for his pristine lacquer work and has won numerous awards and competitions over the years.
